Division of Biomolecular Engineering

Research Objectives

We focus on biomolecules that form the foundation of life (especially, nucleic acids and proteins) and also on biomolecular life systems in which various biomolecules work in a concerted manner (e.g., a translation system). We harness and/or expand their functions to engineer non-natural biomolecules and bio-systems with novel functions and develop useful biotechnologies.
Specifically, we utilize a wheat germ extract with biomolecular engineering to promote the following research projects:

  1. Rational design of artificial riboswitches
  2. Engineering of novel functional proteins
  3. Development of biosensors for nucleic acids
  4. Creation and applications of bio-nanomaterials
  5. RNA stabilization and activation
